The Stella Cabeca Story: British Tourist to Line Dance Guru

The story of the Line Dance Guru as you know her today but what she has never told about her life before she came to the U.S.A. and after she first arrived as a British tourist on holiday for a week.

I was born on a freezing cold night in Ashton-U-Lynne Lancashire in the North of England February 2nd 1953.I was the 3rd child born to parents Stella Ball and Charles Ball.  Mum was a London Royal College of music teacher and Dad, a former Grenadier guard and personal Queens’s regiment to Queen Elizabeth when she was just a teenager.

I was the first girl and soon to be followed by a third brother, so there were 4 of us for many years till my sisters came a long 8 years later 18 months between them, now there were 6 children, 3 boys, 3 girls.

To say our child hood was dysfunctional would be an understatement even by today’s standards, where it seems more and more children are raised in homes of abuse or just plain neglect. The difference was back then it was all kept quiet and swept under the rug. The neighbors ignored the screaming domestic abuse between my father and mother unless occasionally it became so disruptive they would make an anonymous call to police. Not many homes had phones in those day’s but we were fortunate the next door neighbor had a phone, and when the police arrived they would calm the situation and just leave, often with me clinging to the officers leg begging to be taken away with them. The law was such at that time that unless one or the other spouse was willing to file charges they could not arrest anyone.
My Mum had a great sense of humor, was utterly charming and men found her irresistible. My father super intelligent, who spoke many languages and possessed a vast knowledge through books but was a full blown alcoholic and was addicted to codeine which you could buy over the counter. He was prone to violence when in on codeine and alcohol to my mother and older brother Charles in particular.

During the Month, there was times where we had no money, no food, no coal for the no hot water, and no hot water but Sober parents as they could not afford to drink or go to pubs. These were hard times but actually happier times for the 6 children because the abusive situations were not as frequent.

I became the mother figure to my baby sisters at age 11. I took care of them and my younger brother as he was very small and suffered a lot with nightmares and fear of being in the dark. I did everything possible to shield them from what my older brothers and I had endured and thank god mum and dad finally separated when I just turned 12.
As in any divorce there was a custody fight and  I bounced back and forth from mum to dads. I kept running away from mum to seek refuge with dad, at the time least of two evils. Then one day Welfare Officers took me away in a big fancy car  as I was leaving church with the school choir I sang in. I was taken back to mum as she had just been given legal custody of me after the newspaper reported us living in unfit conditions in the house with dad. There was a big article in the paper and my mum’s side of the family, who were well to do in the town and well known business people and property owners were quite embarrassed by it all. Yet as affluent as they were, they were unwilling or  unable to adopt 6 kids at the time.  I was taken back to Mum to live years of trying to be a teenager, trying not to be abused, trying to look after my sisters. Finally on my baby sisters 18th birthday, I boarded a plane to New York City, little did I know how this trip was about  just to change my life. I was about to be born again and start a new life.

Next week I will explore how music and dancing helped during those child hood years to keep my sanity and my zest for life and love of people. And more on how what I thought was a short trip to the States became a new and wonderful life.

Stella Cabeca’s Report on the October 29th 2011 Cruise on Oasis of the Seas

Wow what a cruise! This was the best ever ship, Bloody Marvelous instructors, fantastic dancers, friends, family, and last but not least Nancy Lombardi, Pleasure travel and her team. I was so spoiled with all this love and support that I so happily received on this particular cruise.
Over the years I have been a one man band running the show for the group and often the passengers, working day and night and loving every minute of it.  Always with my right hand man, my best friend, my man Friday and my soul mate, George by my side. Unfortunately, now George depends on me and can no longer take care of me or himself, so your support on this trip was immeasurable.

George is doing fine and is receiving some home care at this time and Yes, he did earn his keep at the Blackjack table and was actually applauded by the casino folks as he bid his farewell cash in hand. Well cash in my hand I should say LOL.

Standing on the dance floor in the Ice rink Studio B looking out at the audience and my floor filled with dancers, all ages, all levels, line dancing, 2 stepping, swinging was a sight I will never forget. So far your feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and we have many already registered taking advantage of the on board credit offered at the time. Singing Lessons: Taking Advantage Of Them

by Davis Richards

If you are going to look for singing lessons, you might also place all of your energy into them and learn whenever you can. This only makes practical sense, but a lot of people don’t learn how to get the most from their lessons. They give up a lot of knowledge and advancement just because they don’t know some simple strategies to obtain every last drop of understanding out of their lessons.

The first way to get the most out of singing lessons should be to make sure the instruction is completely free of diversion. If you need to take lessons with several other aspiring singers, you will only obtain divided concentration from the instructor. You will be held back by the distraction developed by the entire class. This is why students who take private singing lessons tend to move much faster than those who only take group classes.

You will find some very effective online programs that offer singing lessons, but you will have to ensure that your home environment is without any distractions to get the most out of them. Put aside time when there are no children, mates, televisions, or ringing phones to distract your attention away from the tutorial. Take this seriously and give yourself the chance to truly focus and produce additional skills.

Once you’ve an exclusive environment free of distraction, it is time to think about the ability of your selected instructor to educate you to higher skill levels. Take a look at what your tutor has attained in their singing career. Never expect an instructor to take you beyond what they have gone with their own singing abilities.

Which means you may need to seek out online singing lessons offered by expert, popular singers if you aspire to a professional level in your own profession. If you cannot find that type of quality instruction in your local area or do not want the prices of those established singers, you may find online programs that meet your needs. You’ll find courses now provided from some of the top artists around the nation and the programs are very reasonably priced.

Another tactic to make the most of your singing lessons is simply to rehearse the new skills discussed in each and every lesson. You should never advance from one lesson to a different one until you feel confident with the skills offered. If you are still shaky or do not understand a thing, then you should insist upon further training when you advance.

You will not advance in skill immediately if you’re not practicing on a regular, or at least close to regular, basis. Exercises needs to be applied over and over. Scales must be practiced regularly. Each new idea ought to be on your thoughts whenever you have a second to reflect. Printed materials offered with your singing lessons need to be studied at least a couple times among classes. This is how you’ll truly grow as a singer. It is all in the training.

Finally, you’ll get more out of your singing lessons once you really challenge yourself. Never stick to easy lessons because you feel safer and even achieved. Always push oneself to go to the next stage. Focus on excellence. If you feel unpleasant or even unsure in certain cases, you are probably pushing tough enough for real progress.

Green Haven Monday Night Dance Class

For the past 4 years, I had the pleasure of being the Instructor of  a Beginner/Intermediate International Line Dance class in my local Home Owners Community Center, Green Haven, that was open to the home owners and to the community at large.

I had the pleasure of instructing a group of ladies that made teaching International Line Dancing such a joy.    It was this group of ladies that assisted me in becoming an Instuctor able to make a class enjoyable and challenging for all levels of dancer.

I did this class as a volunteer service for my community but it became a devotion to this group of wonderful ladies that made it a Monday Night necessity. There was nothing that kept me from holding this class, no holiday,  weather, nor swollen ankle, the only time we would not have a Monday Night class was when I was not in the State of Florida,

I relocated to Tennessee this past week. I had been planning this move to Tennessee for over 5 years but the past few months seem to move more quickly than I anticipated. I did not realize how ending this one class would effect me. This wonderful group of ladies had become more than a class to teach each week but an additional extension of my South Florida Family.

I truly miss seeing these wonderful ladies and hope they took my advice to follow my Dance Guru Stella Cabeca.   It is because of these ladies and Stella that I have decided to pursue my new goal of becoming an International Line Dance Instructor in my new home town.

It won’t be tomorrow but coming soon look out for Larry B. International Line Dance Instructor from Clarksville Tennessee.  Thank you my wonderful ladies of Green Haven Monday Night Dance class and thank you Stella for all your inspiration.  Larry has a new goal to work toward in Tennessee.

My Dancing Family

Ellen Honey Felicetti newest article.

In 1969, I was stricken with an illness that paralyzed the left side of my body. It just came on over night, and after many test and hospitalized for 6 weeks. I thought my teaching and business days were over. It was my Dance Family in the city that came to my rescue. Mindy McGovern, known as Miss Kay, Walter Fields, Steve Colombo(a senior dancer and performer on t.v.), and all my Honeyettes, they kept my studios going to a “T”. Just as sudden as its onset, the illness just left one day and the doctors at the time said it was some rare type of virus. After a few weeks of Florida sun I was back to work. It was the unity of the dance community and my dear friends that are still there for me to this very day that kept my dream alive.

Recital time got harder each year with rehersals starting in late April to June. These were held on Sunday, yes I was now working 7 days a week. Each year the props and scenery had to be built to make the shows more professional, the routines and music had to be new and inventive, so family time was limited. I was missing out on family time.  Yes, my love of dancing and hard work, had given me a wonderful life, beautiful home with pool, a wonderful husband, three great kids and life-long friends . So after 25 years in the Great life of Dance, I decided to retire early in life and be a full time housewife/Mother. Or was it a lady of leisure, guess which won out.

Whichever one you may have thought of, you would be Wrong, I lasted one full summer being a full time mom, lady of leisure housewife…

One day I was at the famous Spags Store in Shrewbury MA, on route 9. I saw a little free standing store for rent. I remembered how hard it was driving to Boston to purchase Dance Supplies and costumes for my students. Remember this was before the World Wide Web. So I called the number on the door when I got home, again before those cute little cell phones. The rent was affordable and the owner was excited that I was planning a Theatrical Dancewear and Costume Shop, we made a great deal and Honey’s Theatrical and Dancewear Shop was born. This was a great location and wonderful new venture in my life and I was still part of the Dance community.  Tell you more in my next posting..

I want to recognize some of my former students that went on to open their own studios: Marion Rittaco, Karen Labrie, Karen White(still teaching),Nola Jean Borrelli(still teaching), Marie Geddes, Joan Yankowskas(still teaching), Denise Day(still teaching), Daria Atainain, and Carolyn Amaral(still teaching).

A few that went on to professional show business careers; Steve Colombo(local TV Boston MA area), Jonathan Smith(Broadway and Las Vagas)

Daria Atianian(Best Choreographer for “Annie Warbucks” from the South Florida Critics Association, Presently Choreographer for “Menapaus”-all touring company, faculty of “Dance Olympus” and “Dance Master”, just to name a few).

Sheila Waters Fucci of Connecticut earned her B.F.A. in Dance from Boston Conservatory of Music. Taught for the UConn Theater Department. She performed and choreographed at the Warner Theater, Simsbury Theater Guild, Manchester Music Players, and Salsbury Players. Shelia also choreographed the World Premier and First National Tour of “Magic Tree House: the Musical”.

On June 17, 2011, I received a letter from Sheila that makes a former Dance Teacher so Proud. The letter read as follows: Dearest Honey, This is long overdue, but none the less sincere. Thank You from the bottom of my heart to my tapping toes. I think of you often and know that you gave me such a wonderful foundation. I was named Teacher of the Year and once again I have you to thank. Much love and Admiration. Shelia.

I guess I became the Ms. Ruby Hickey that I admired when I was 4 years old. What a wonderful surprise.
If I wrote about all the notes and letters, I have received over the years and most likely still have tucked away in my photo albums, you would understand the power of the Dance Community family. But I would need my own website and would most likely bore every one.. till next time  Ms. Honey.

Top 10 Reasons Why Learning To Dance Makes You A Better Lover

By Shawn Byfield

Britt and Madge Kiss….could it be the Dancing….

It’s true: Learning to dance actually improves your love life. “If you’re looking to spice up your love life, learning to dance is a sure-fire way to attract the opposite sex” says Shawn Byfield, a leading expert in dance instruction for adults.

Besides the obvious ability to show off your new dance moves, learning to dance comes with many other romantic benefits. Here’s Byfield’s top 10 tips explaining why dancers make better lovers:

1.) Better Rhythm: Hearing the rhythm of the music directly translates into keeping a better rhythm between the sheets. Women appreciate men who can keep a constant rhythm, which leads to a big… well, you know.

2.) Better Confidence: Learning to dance improves your confidence on and off the dance floor. The #1 most attractive trait about a partner is their confidence level. Boldly use your moves to sweep your partner off the dance floor and bring them… somewhere more private.

3.) Better in Bed: This goes without saying. Watching your partner move well on the dance floor is subconsciously a very sexy indicator of how well they’ll partner with you under the covers.

4.) Better Improvisation skills: Sometimes, things go wrong. And that’s also true in bed. Learning to dance teaches you to improvise and think on your feet. Dancers transform awkward lovemaking situations and improvise new scenarios. Or positions. Or locations. Or…

5.) Better Stamina: Out of breath? Not if you dance regularly. The cardio workout from dancing dramatically boosts your stamina. Which is why dancers always have longer “sexercise” than the average person.

6.) Better Skin: If sweat grosses you out, it shouldn’t. That sweaty dance workout actually helps clear your pores and releases toxins that create pimples, blackheads and acne. So dance often, and reap the rewards of beautiful skin.

7.) Better Flexibility: Can’t touch your toes? Chances are, your love making experience could benefit from a dance class. Regular stretching and warm ups improves your flexibility and circulation throughout your muscles. Nothing’s worse than a leg cramp in the middle of a horizontal mambo… Dancers use their limber limbs to grind to new heights.

8.) Better Creativity: A common complaint among couples is bedroom boredom. Same place, same position… Dancers know how to break the monotony because they’re forced to use more right brain functions- which is the artistic, creative side of the brain. Who needs a bed when there’s a perfectly good kitchen counter? Dancers use their noggin to experience how good change can be.

9.) Better Positive Energy: Dance releases endorphins in your body, which is one of the chemicals your body releases, leaving you feeling more positive, relaxed, and generally happier. A positive person is always a turn-on. Nobody wants a grumpy friend with benefits.

10.) Better Friends: Lastly, it’s important to know that being a better lover isn’t just about bedroom buddies. It’s about building a mutual relationship of trust. Learning to dance teaches you how to listen, respect, love and appreciate yourself and others. Which are excellent qualities in a mind-blowing romp partner… AND a best friend.

So if you’re looking to improve the quality of your love making, and want to develop that sex appeal others won’t be able to resist, make the time to learn to dance. Your bedroom will never be the same again!

The Famous Honeyettes

Now that I had a larger studio, I was able to have 2 classes going at the same time. Ballet was taught by Denise Day, Tap by Marion Ritacco and Gymnastics by Eddie Mecca, who went on to be a T.V. Star as the Big Ragu on Laverne and Shirley. I had Belly Dancing taught by Joan Yankowskas, Ballroom by several teachers that would rent out one of the studios for a few hours a week.  At this time, I had two more Studios, one in Grafton taught by Marie Geddes, a senior student of mine and one at the A. J. Club in Worcester as taught by a senior student, Karen La Bree. My enrollment was now up to 400 students a week.

Yes, I was living my dream, dance studio owner, dance instructor, wife and now a mother of three with arrival of our baby girl, Andrea. A new house across the street from my parents so they were still helping with baby sitting.

Unfortunately, my Father died of a sudden heart attack in 1965, while on the dance floor of an Alsac Charity for which he was chairman. It was also at this time, I decided to stop dancing in Night Clubs and started only doing charity performing. I worked 5 days a week with Saturday being the busiest.

The City of Worcester was having an urban renewal in the late 60’s and my Studio had to go. While looking for a new location, I had a large studio built in my basement. I had to cut back on class size and work more hours to make things move forward. It was also during this time, that I created a group of older students called the “Honeyette”. They were beautiful girls from 16 to 19 years old. They were very popular in performing at many social and political functions.

After two years with the home studio, I found a great large studio on Shrewsbury Street in Worcester. The location was in the Italian district near downtown and had been a night club/Supper club called Mr. A’s. This location had mirrors up to the ceiling which was great for teaching. Classes grew quickly and the Studio continued to grow and prosper.

I would take a group of my older students to New York and Boston to attend Conventions. There was one time in New York with 5 teenagers that we got stranded by a Blizzard. The girls checked out of their room before learning that the bus was not running back to Worcester. So without any money left between them, we became roommates for three days, sharing 2 beds and floor. Due to the blizzard room service at the hotel stopped on the second day and we had to search for anything open till the bus service started again. It was this type of great relationships that I developed with my students that have lasted a lifetime of friendships.

All My early dreams came true with hard work and sacrifices. I will continue later with success of many of my greatest students over the 25 years. I became a member of Professional Dance Teachers of America, Dance Masters, Dance Caravan of America, and the Ballet Society. TILL THE NEXT TIME

My Studio continues to Grow..

Here is another installment of how the love of dance influence Ellen “Honey” Felicetti Valinski’s life.

In June of 1954, I graduated from Commerce High School after directing many variety shows and plays. Andy and I got engaged and I was seeing my studio starting to become a success. My Dad was happy to see me graduate and start earning more than enough to take all responsibilities on my own for the studio.

Andy was ready to help me in any way he could with my business and he did. In September of 54, my enrollment more than tripled. My classes got bigger and more private lessons were being booked. I was still performing weekends, this time with Andy at my side; this gave me the added income to grow the business.

I was able to hire an old time piano player for my classes and special private students, who were willing to pay for live music.  The piano player was Gert Corrazini; she was an old time show tune and silent movie piano player. She loved working with the students and was great to have live music instead of records all the time for the classes.

Andy and I married in February 1955, we moved into my parents 2 family house which gave us a chance to put more money into my business. Andy was able to start on his education and future career as a hairdresser.  I was able to now study dance once a month in New Your City with some of the best tap instructors. It was a grind as I had to take a 4 hour bus trip each way but I loved it. No skipping lessons any more, my dance instructors studios were all on Broadway, which made it more exciting.  I had a dream and wanted to fulfill it. The glamour of it all finally started to become a reality and meeting so many aspiring dancers was great.

I became a mother the following February to my first son Andy Jr. and thought I would not be able to keep up the pace but with the help of my mother and father, I continue to grow my business. My recitals began to take on another look with great scenery for the stage made mostly by many Dads of my students. Costumes became more elaborate and the one piece piano became a 3 or 4 piece ban. Each year that I had a recital, I had a larger theater. The work got harder as I alone had to create my own programs, order tickets, plan the music, order costumes and promote the even.

I had to get a larger studio and I was able to rent the whole 4th floor in a building closer to middle of downtown, close to my first studio. My Dad and Andy put in a new floor, mirrors and separated the floor into two studios, reception and dressing room. I was able to hire extra instructors. Things were moving along great, even as my second son, Brian came along. I went straight from the studio to the delivery room.

Most of my students took lessons from the time they were young into their teens and adulthood. That is will have to be in my next installment. Ms. Honey
